ALFA End of Year Fire Season Presentations and AGM

ICIN was invited to observe the Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) AGM and end of year fire meeting.

We flew into Gove and then drove out to Gulkula (Miwatj land), where we were greeted by the ALFA team and ranger groups. It was great to hear about all of the fire projects that were delivered over the previous fire season in Arnhem Land and also the positive environmental, social and economic impacts of savanna fire management.

"Each year all the ranger groups come together at the end of the fire season to spend time reflecting on how their fire management went and to present some key learnings back to the larger group" Jennifer Ansell, ALFA CEO.

Throughout the presentations there was a big focus on right way fire burning, the importance of consultation with traditional owners and working together to achieve good outcomes for country and community.

"Knowledge sharing, teaching one another and knowing one another, through the work we are doing... it is very important" Yinimala, Yirralka Rangers

We were happy to hear many of the ranger groups mention in their presentations that The Savanna Fire Forum was an opportunity to connect and share knowledge off of one another and look forward to welcoming you all again in 2026.

"I really enjoyed sitting and listening to all of the different work the ranger groups are doing... ensuring right way fire is being implemented on country"
"The savanna fire method and opportunity to do that is a key opportunity for our communities across the North...it also has given them an opportunity to reconnect with country and be on country" - Suzanne Thompson, ICIN Director

ICIN extends a huge congratulations and thank you to ALFA and all of the ranger groups for the work they do keeping North Australia fire country healthy and strong.
