ICIN is partnering with the Australian Government to deliver policy and educational/communications streams within the First Nations Carbon Farming Outreach Program.
This project will run from May 2025 through to June 2028. For this substantial piece of work, ICIN is receiving $2.3 million over three years.
This project contains two components:
- First Nations consultation in relation to the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme (ACCU Scheme), and
- Developing and delivering tailored First Nations training and resources.
1) This policy work stream supports ICIN members people to be informed about and provide their views on government emission reduction methods, policies and programs, particularly in relation to the ACCU Scheme.
There are currently 43 Indigenous-owned carbon projects, and while these projects are a great success story (particularly within the Savanna Fire Management carbon methodology), this work stream supports greater Indigenous participation in the ACCU Scheme and across other methods and new methods in development.
Beyond method development, this work also supports First Nations consultation on legislative changes, such as the Government’s commitment to amend the CFI Act (Australia's legislation underpinning the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme), to remove the ability to conditionally register projects on native title land.
Information regarding this policy work is shared within the ICIN Policy Working Group, including upcoming workshops (online and in-person) and submissions, policies and legislation open for consultation. ICIN Full and Associate Members are automatically invited to be a part of the ICIN Policy Working Group. For more information please email [email protected], and view our membership application process, which outlines who is eligible to apply to be an ICIN member.
