The Northern Territory Government has opened public consultation for both the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Policy, and the Large Emitters Policy. Public consultation for both policies will close on the 15th of October 2021.
Both the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Policy, and the Large Emitters Policy, forms part of a suite of initiatives that the Northern Territory Government is introducing to meet their 2050 net zero emissions target.
ICIN is alarmed to note that the proposed caps within the policy are very high: 100'000t pa from direct greenhouse gas pollution, and 500'00t pa from land clearing. It is only after that these caps have been exceeded that projects will be required to develop a Greenhouse Gas Abatement Plan.
Both policies are relevant to Indigenous Land and Sea Management operations in the Northern Territory, and ICIN encourages all NT members to view the draft policies and consider making a submission.
ICIN will be working with our NT members to draft a formal submission, as well as facilitating a briefing with the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security to seek further information.
