Site Visit – Australia Awards international delegates attend workshop about the Indigenous Carbon Industry

On Friday 28th March, ICIN was honoured to welcome 20 international delegates from Nepal, Bangladesh and Mongolia to its Darwin office on Larrakia Country for a workshop about the Indigenous carbon industry.

The delegates were all Australia Awards (scholarships and short courses offered to emerging leaders for study, research and professional development in Australia) South Asia and Mongolia recipients, and studying a Masters or PhD by scholarship through the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The following speakers presented at the workshop:

  • Cameron Yates, Researcher at CDU Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research, gave an overview of the Savanna Fire Management carbon method.
  • Fred Hunter, Bininj man (West Arnhem Land Traditional Owner) of Warddeken Land Management, explained how the Savanna Fire Management carbon project across West Arnhem supports better management of fire and better outcomes for Country and Bininj.
  • Anna Boustead, CEO of ICIN, gave an overview of the history and evolution of the network and explained how it supports good outcomes for Indigenous people through facilitating knowledge sharing, advocacy and Indigenous-led policy development.

Delegates also enjoyed a trip to Kakadu National Park before returning to Kabi Kabi Country on the Sunshine Coast. They hope to take learnings from their visit to Australia back to their home countries.
