The Indigenous Carbon Industry Network (ICIN) was invited to host a stall at the 2026 Kimberley Land Council (KLC), Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre, Kimberley Language Resource Centre and Aarnja annual general meetings at Wuggubun campground in the East Kimberley, in August. This is the first time ICIN has been able to attend KLC’s AGM, and we hope to attend each year going forward, to connect with our members in the Kimberley and establish relationships with future members.
These annual gatherings are an opportunity for traditional owners across the Kimberley region to come together and speak about what matters to them. ICIN’s presence enabled two-way learning, with the ICIN team able to connect with local people who shared what these events meant to them, as well as ICIN able to speak to people about the support available to Indigenous people to encourage participation in the carbon industry.

Aaila is a young Nimanburr and Yawuru woman who has been working at West Kimberley Futures Empowered communities for several years, supporting good outcomes for young people in her role as media, evaluation and communications coordinator.
We caught up with Nyul Nyul PBC representative Fiona Smith who was also a 2026 Savanna Fire Forum and National Indigenous Carbon Forum delegate. Fiona spoke about the importance of the annual meetings and let us know she is looking forward to the 2027 Savanna Fire Forum.

In the Kimberley, the KLC, support four ICIN members: Dambimangari, Wilinggin, Wunambal Gaambera Uunguu and Balanggarra to work together on the North Kimberley Fire Abatement Project. Since these carbon projects began, they have produced more than 1.89 million ACCUs, revenue from these carbon projects are being used to create employment on Country and to reinvest back into community-based initiatives.
