Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation Indigenous Protected Area Launch
On the 22 of October ICIN were invited by Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation (ASRAC) to celebrate the momentous Arafura Swamp Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) ceremony. ICIN travelled to Djakarlawirrka (Army Crossing) near the community of Ramingining in Arnhem Land. The new Arafura Swamp IPA contributes 1.3 million hectares of land and sea Country over which Yolngu, Bininji and Rembarrnga people hold inalienable freehold rights under the Commonwealth Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act (1976).
The dedication of Arafura Swamp IPA management is shared with existing IPA’s and overlapping regions, honoring complex and interconnected traditional land management and caring for Country responsibilities. ICIN are honored to have been a part of this historic and heartwarming event and thank ASARC for their invitation and congratulate them on this significant milestone.
