New Savanna Fire Management methods launched

ICIN welcomes the release of two new Savanna Fire Management carbon methods, that have been in development for some time, and include new important updates that will generate substantial benefits for ICIN members. 

The two new methods, announced on Friday 10th April, under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme and approved by Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson MP, are:

• 2026 savanna fire management sequestration and emissions avoidance method, please find the method here.

ICIN is pleased that under the new sequestration method, sequestration accrued to-date under existing savanna fire management projects will be credited, this is a really important positive outcome for all existing savanna fire management projects and in-line with ICIN's advocacy efforts. 

Carbon workshop - 18 May, Fremantle, WA

ICIN is hosting a free workshop in Perth to support Indigenous organisations and land managers to better understand carbon farming opportunities. This session will introduce key concepts relevant to carbon projects on Country, including foundational knowledge on carbon markets, carbon methods and considerations for participation. This session is open to ICIN full and associate members, Indigenous organisations and staff working at Indigenous organisations. This workshop is being delivered as part of the First Nations Carbon Farming Outreach Program. We hope to see you there.

Risks and benefits of blue carbon

Read an article published by the National Environmental Science Program that details the project led by ICIN exploring how Indigenous rights, interests and aspirations intersect with Australia’s emerging blue carbon and environmental markets. This work has involved ICIN partnering with researchers from Charles Darwin University and the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA).

"Blue carbon presents a real opportunity for Indigenous groups, but only if Indigenous rights are recognised from the outset. Projects must be Indigenous-led and grounded in free, prior and informed consent,” said Anna Boustead, ICIN Chief Executive Officer.

ICIN at the Carbon Farming Industry Forum

ICIN Director and Kimberley Land Council Deputy CEO, Sarah Parriman, will be speaking about opportunities and risks for Indigenous people within the carbon industry at the 2026 Carbon Farming Industry Forum, 19-21 May, Fremantle, Western Australia. One of the program's themes, within this annual event organised by the Carbon Market Institute, is 'Regional Community Opportunities and Indigenous Carbon'. We hope to see you there. 

The Network at Developing the North Conference

ICIN will be delivering a presentation and hosting a booth which will showcase the success of the Indigenous Carbon Industry at the Developing Northern Australia Conference in Alice Springs, 5-7 August. Introducing our new Policy Manager

ICIN would like to warmly welcome our new policy manager Jady Smith. Jady is an environmental policy, climate and resilience specialist with over 20 years experience across the Asia–Pacific. We are hiring multiple roles

ICIN is recruiting for a Project Officer (Indigenous-identified) and an Operations Manager to support the growing interest in the Indigenous carbon sector. The Project Officer will support projects and events across the network, including coordination, logistics and communications. The ILSC have Disaster Recovery Quick Response Grants to support Indigenous organisations whose property has been affected by natural disaster. Grants of up to $20,000 are available, find detailed information and eligibility requirements below. There is no closing date for applications.
