ALFA on Country Board Meeting
In August, 14 of ALFA’s 18 Aboriginal board directors, who all own and run savanna fire management carbon projects on their Country, met on remote Malnyangarnak. Directors travelled near and far to be a part of important conversations about changing weather patterns and the increasing damage done to Country by hard hoofed animals. Full update below.

ICIN Board Directors at Major Conference
Our awesome ICIN Co-Chairs Cissy Gore-Birch OAM and Dr Dean Munuggullumurr Yibarbuk will be speaking at Australia's Great North Conference in Garamilla (Darwin). Cissy and Dean will be on the following panel 'Hybrid economic futures: First Nations economic empowerment'. If you are around Garamilla this week, come and hear from some inspiring Indigenous leaders!

ICIN Policy Working Group Update

ACCU Scheme methods

  • ICIN held meetings with DCCEEW about our feedback on SavCAM. We will have a follow up meeting with CSIRO, and keep members informed about progress.
  • ICIN held the feral ungulate Working Group meeting to hear from NAILSMA and the University of Queensland about how ICIN Member feedback has been incorporated into the draft method for the management of introduced hooved animals (ungulates). A document comparing our feedback and changes will be shared with members.
  • ICIN participated in the first meeting with NAILSMA about the proposed nature repair method on Indigenous fire management for biodiversity. NAILSMA has sub-contracted ICIN to run consultations with our members. We are working on the timeline and will update members ASAP.
Blue Carbon and Environmental Markets Project
  • In early August, we held a workshop with the Carpentaria Land Council about opportunities and risks for groups on their Country regarding blue carbon and the introduced hooved animal method.
  • In early September, we held a workshop in Cairns to bring together traditional owner groups and Native Title Representative Bodies in Queensland with an interest in blue carbon.
Indigenous Landholder Support Project
  • In August, we held the first Project Working Meeting for the Indigenous Landholder Support Project. This project is funded by ILSC and is focused on developing resources to support Indigenous organisations to negotiate better outcomes from carbon projects.
