The Alinytjara Wilurara (AW) Landscape region covers the northwest third of South Australia, an area of more than 250,000 km2. In Pitjantjatjara, ‘alinytjara’ means ‘north’ and ‘wilurara’ means ‘west’. There is no privately owned land in the region.
This large geographic area has been divided into nine sub-landscapes, each with distinct characteristics. This enables a more focused approach to be taken to planning, working on problems and reporting.
The nine sub-landscapes are:
- Bunda Cliffs (including Merdayerrah Sandpatch)
- Yalata Coast
- Nullarbor Plain
- Yalata Lands (including Colona and Pintumba)
- Yellabinna and Yumbarra
- Great Victoria Desert
- Southern APY
- APY Ranges
- Eastern APY and Tallaringa
The Alinytjara Wilurara (AW) Landscape Board is the only all-Aboriginal board of its kind in Australia, and works closely with landholding authorities, communities and Anangu ranger groups on environmental projects that safeguard threatened species, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and manage pest plant and animal species.
As an Associate member of ICIN, AW Landscapes wishes to strengthen their function as a provider of impartial information about the carbon market and to support landholding authorities to ensure nature positive outcomes.
