December Update from the Network

Celebrating a Fantastic Year

ICIN is thrilled by the year we have had. Here are some highlights from the Network.

  • In February, the 2024 North Australia Savanna Fire Forum saw 400 attendees gather across 23 workshops and the chance to listen to 75 speakers. We are grateful to all the event sponsors, organisations and Members whose dedication highlights the significance of savanna fire management in caring for Country and the growing and successful Indigenous carbon industry.

  • We launched the 'Blue Carbon in Australia: Understanding the opportunity for Indigenous People. A background report providing information and mapping related to Indigenous participation in Blue Carbon projects' Report in collaboration with CDU and NAILSMA.

  • In August, CEO Anna Boustead returned from maternity leave. We thank interim CEO's Jann Crass and Sean Ansel for all their hard work throughout the year.

  • We welcomed our newest staff member, Amy O'Brien, as Projects Officer.

  • Two carbon methods that the ICIN supported were selected for prioritisation under the Australian Government’s proponent-led method development process. These include the Blue Carbon (Feral Ungulate Management) Method and the Savanna Fire Management (Northern Arid Zone Method Extension) Carbon Method. Congratulations to UQ, NAILSMA, IDA and all the other ICIN Members, people and organisations involved in this work.

  • Throughout the year, ICIN Chairs, Directors, and Staff have attended countless Forums and Conferences on behalf of ICIN including: NAILSMA'S 'Reimagining Conservation' Forum, Dangkal Gwo’Yal-Wa (First Nations Land and Water Management) Forum, The Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) conference, The Australian Sea Country conference, CMI Australasian Emission Reduction Summit, and notably Director Suzanne Thompson attend COP29 in November.

We are grateful for all hard work put in by the ICIN Board and staff this year, and to the Network for their support and feedback throughout 2024.

The ICIN will be taking a break over the holidays from December 20th, 2024, to January 6th, 2025.
