ICIN Director Suzanne Thompson at COP29, talking all things Nature Positive and Net Zero

ICIN is pleased to report that Iningai woman and ICIN Director, Suzanne Thompson flew to Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP29).

On November 13th, Suzanne represented her roles as founder and Director of Yambangku Aboriginal Cultural Heritage & Tourism Development Aboriginal Corporation (YACHATDAC) and Director of ICIN on a panel titled "Natural Capital Accounting: Informing the Nature Positive Transition" hosted by Climate Friendly. The session centred on the role of natural capital accounting in achieving a nature-positive and net zero transition.

"Everything we do as First Nations people is decarbonisation... For us, being the oldest continual practicing culture on the planet, it speaks volumes about the knowledge we have to share," said Suzanne Thompson from COP29.

The session rounded out with a discussion on the importance of carbon credits in moving Australia towards net zero. Carbon projects, like the one managed by Suzanne on her Country and by other ICIN members all across Australia, are a vital tool in managing emissions levels and also in funding Indigenous organisations to care for Country. Carbon markets should not be used by industries where the technology exists for emissions reduction but instead are invaluable to industries where sustainable technologies for a just transition are yet to be developed.

Such an important conversation to have platformed on the world stage!

ALFA Celebrates 10 Years

We extend a huge congratulations to ICIN Full Member Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (NT) on their 10 Year anniversary! Amy (the newest member of the ICIN staff team) was fortunate to take part in the day's proceedings which included:

  • hearing end-of-year reflections from ranger groups across Arnhem land (including ICIN members ASRAC, Bawinanga, Jawoyn, Mimal, Warddekken, and Yirralka ranger groups).
  • celebrating as certifications of achievement were handed out to rangers for aerial bombardiering, injury prevention and planned burning qualifications undertaken in 2024 through ALFA and,
  • reflections on a decade of operations across all the branches of ALFA with anecdotes from CEO Jen Ansel, Terrah Guymala (Wardekken), and Dr Otto Bulmaniya Campion (ASRAC).

It was great to be able to celebrate alongside so many members of the Network on beautiful Jawoyn Country at Nitmiluk.

ICIN Featured in Forum for the Future "Bright Spot" Campaign

We’re proud that the Network has been featured as one of the Bright Spots in The Future of Sustainability: Reimagining the Way the World Works campaign.

"Through their carbon projects, ICIN members integrate tens of thousands of years of Caring for Country knowledge, with cutting-edge science, distinguishing it from conventional carbon market approaches." - ICIN "Bright Spot" Article

This campaign, led by Forum for the Future in partnership with The Earthshot Prize, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, and Trane Technologies, explores how Bright Spots are reigniting hope by bringing a much-needed focus on the successes, challenges and innovations already playing out on the frontlines of sustainability — and the valuable lessons they offer.
