The Network is at the Carbon Market Institute (CMI)'s Australasian Emissions Reduction (AER) Summit for the next two days, proudly showcasing the benefits of Indigenous-owned and -run carbon projects and the inspirational work of our Full and Associate Members in the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network booth.
Staff are also promoting the date for the 2026 Savanna Fire and National Indigenous Carbon Forum and the significant legally recognised rights to carbon that Indigenous groups have in Australia. We thank the CMI for creating a space for ICIN at the summit.
From the Network, we are pleased to have Jamie Yibarbuk, Djelk Ranger in Maningrida and ALFA board member, Adrian Enright, ALFA and Ella Rudland, from the Kimberley Land Council. It's been great to catch up with Leslie Schulz from the Ngadju Conservation Aboriginal Corporation, Brian Warner from the Kabi Kabi Peoples' Aboriginal Corporation and Matthew Burns, CEO, Taungurung Land & Waters Council.
Of interest to our members, in the Ministerial Address, the Hon Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy of Australia, announced the release of the draft Savanna Fire Management sequestration and emissions avoidance method. This method, which has been in development for many years, recognises that good fire management makes a significant contribution to increasing carbon stored in dead and living trees.

This new method represents a significant opportunity for Indigenous Savanna Fire Management projects to grow and continue to contribute significant emissions reductions, keeping country healthy, and supporting their communities. ICIN and our members look forward to working with the Government on the method consultation over the next few months.

This Government has a clear mandate on climate change. Part of this commitment must be working with Indigenous people. We hold rights to carbon over 57% of Australia's land mass. We need to be a part of the conversation. We need meaningful engagement. It is also important that the Government address the backlog around new methodologies, as these will create benefits for all, opportunities for Indigenous People, Partners and Government, which will represent a win/win for everyone," said Leslie at the Summit.
